about

Hi, thanks for reading this blog.

It’s been around for many a year and it’s a mix of artwork analysis, exhibition reviews, interviews, some book reviews, plus in recent months, short essays about prehistoric caves, heritage replicas, VR and immersive environments.

So ‘art blog’ is a broad umbrella here and I’m at work on a book called Contemporary Caves, which will hopefully pull all this together.

The byline for everything you see is Mark Sheerin. I have more bylines with Hyperallergic, the Arts Desk, Border Crossings, Disability Arts Online, Plaster and Art Monthly. I’ve been a journalist since 2009 and a PhD in Art History since 2023, for which I studied representations of parietal works in caves.

In early 2026 I take up a post as Visiting Research Fellow with the Centre for Design History at University of Brighton. So who knows what this deskbound spelunker will unearth in the next 12 months!

Follow me on Instagram or Bluesky, and, for some light reading and armchair travel, please check out this blog’s sister publication, which is on Substack. You can also get in touch. I’m: mark [at] criticismism [dot] com

    Dear Mr. Sheerin,

Thanks for a very cool blog! I’m really a musician myself, first and foremost at least, but I’m releasing this vinyl album together with an artist and I thought it might interest your readers.

Idea is really to merge the two art forms and create a product that is as much music album as piece of art – something both at home in the vinyl player as well as on the wall.

Please drop me a line if you fancy hearing more about it. I’ve also put a video taster and some info on our website (http://www.artmusic.one) if you fancy having a look.

    Many thanks,

    Nils Klöfver

    Hi Mark,
I came across your Criticism ll article post on ‘celebration ‘ by Chaimowicz , and I came across that from this excellent book called The Artists’s House by Kirsty Bell, and see you have been writing a blog/reviews etc for a while. I’m currently doing my MA and this module involves me asking another person to write a statement About me as an artist, you up for it? I’m including my website below but it’s currently in progress , which is agony. As my practice is social engagement from an unorthodox approach I thought I’d apply it here. Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Hi criticismism 🙂

The project consists of three parts:
    1) The Non-place as Home
    2) The Loneliness of the Avatars
    3) My Name is Arthur Cravan
If you want to take a look below you will find the link. Happy browsing!
